Time Management Seminar: Recovering some of what COVID stole.

Most people usually believe that younger people overcome adversity or recover from injury faster and easier than older people.  The shutdowns and the physical distancing protocols that the COVID-19 pandemic caused however, dealt a devastating blow to people in general and young people in particular.

Some of the major negative fallouts from the health protocols:

  • loss of instructional time for students at all stages of the academic development

  • mental health issues resulting from lack of social interactions and having to adjust to radical, sometimes volatile, changes in what was considered “normal”.

  • major changes in available opportunities for upward Socioeconomic mobility among young people

have all contributed significantly to the despair and hopelessness that has become so increasingly and commonly expressed among persons aged 14 to 25 years old.

Project Discovery Time Management seminar is designed to address the challenges young people experience in managing their time and energy in a way that optimizes their potential and causes them to maximise their contribution to, as well as their benefit from, their society. On Saturday October 7th 2023, the most recent Project Discovery Time Management seminar took place.  Students of 6 educational institutions attended the seminar. These are Barbados Community College, Combermere School, Harrison College, Lockerbie Cambridge International School, Springer Memorial School and University of the West Indies.

The three facilitators at the seminar were Mr. Tyrone King – Founder and Chairman of Project Discovery, Ms. Kaliyah Kirton – President of project Discovery Barbados and Ms. Jelissa Bannister – member of Project Discovery Barbados.

The session was very interactive and the participants generally described it as beneficial and informative. By the end of the seminar each participant had designed their own personalised custom time management programme. Participants were also taught how to tweak or modify their programme as their life’s demands change. The aility to modify one’s programme is critically important since this is not a revision programme, or a study timetable. It is not even designed specifically for students, but this skill is used by successful professionals and stay at home parents whose days are hectic because of having to engage in multiple activities each day.  It is very helpful as an organizing skill.

Participant Feedback:

Project discovery is all about the development of individuals, doing events to make us young people better. Recently they hosted a Time Management seminar and I told myself "time management…..? I don't think I need to go to that... lol" But with all Project Discovery has done I decided to go, and that was a great, great decision.  Not only did I understand that I had many free periods in my personal schedule, but I could be doing so much more with my time and still have some to spare. So I urge you, if you're not a part of Project Discovery, consider it and please consider attending one of their Time Management seminars.  Trust me, it won't let you down.

The Time Management seminar was very informative, engaging and helpful to me. Although I really didn't know what to expect, it was very helpful, and I really appreciate that PD persons took time out of their busy schedule to come talk to us and help us. If I have to rate the seminar out of 10, I would give it a 10/10.

Crystal – Springer Memorial School

The Time Management Seminar on Saturday was helpful because I was taught how to schedule my time in relation to my personal schedule and it benefited me because of my spaced-out hours and not knowing what to do with the rest of my time. I would recommend it to anybody because it doesn't focus on a standard schedule like other programs.

The presentation on time management was informative and interesting. During the presentation, we learned about planning future time management schedules by allocating designated times to set events.
